Simple insect pollinator surveys

Following on from our  ‘Introduction to identifying sand dune insect pollinators’ workshops, we’ll be using our new-found skills to carry out some Flower-Insect Timed Count (FIT Count) surveys at St Gothian Sands.

These are simple 10 minute surveys where you record the number and type of pollinating insects visiting specific flower species.  These FIT counts are part of the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme and give useful data about the health of the UK’s pollinator population.

You don’t need to have specific plant or insect ID expertise to take part – we aim to learn together (but if you can tell bees from wasps, or hoverflies from other flies then we’d love you to share your expertise with us!)

Please note: this session runs from 10am to 2pm, pre-booking essential

Date of Session: 29/07/2025

Meeting at: 10am at St Gothian Sands main entrance, on B3301 coast road, just east of Gwithian village
