Autumn Lady’s Tresses hunt.

Date: 31/08/2025 @ 10:00 am

Details:

Autumn lady’s tresses is a beautiful small orchid, considered vulnerable, which likes calcareous short grassland with which the Towans abounds. It is sensitive to soil enrichment by dog fouling and trampling by humans. We undertook an extensive structured survey throughout the Towansn in 2023 finding over 10,000 plants, and followed this up with a brief monitoring survey of some of the sites last year, finding very few, and mostly on new sites. This year, with your help, we would like to carry out a more extensive monitoring survey as we have concluded that the individual plants do not bloom each year and we would like to explore this further. Surveying is simple and enjoyable as we count each blooming plant, mechanical counter in hand, whilst enjoying the Towans in all it’s Autumn glory.

Be prepared for all weathers, wear sturdy footwear and bring a packed lunch. We will finish arounf 2pm

Directions: Park in the larger of the two small free car parks when youn turn off the Hayle-Godrevy road towards the main Gwithian car park. Look out for the Friends of the Towans flag.
