About Save Our Sand
Save Our Sand, a long-established group of volunteers set up to look after Hayle’s beaches, became part of Friends of the Towans in 2021.

Who we are
It is now a working party of FOTT, and in liaison with landowners, continues to organise monthly beach cleans throughout the spring, summer and early autumn, in various locations from Hayle to Godrevy.
By picking up litter from the shore, volunteers help to keep our seas healthier and stop marine wildlife from accidentally eating or getting trapped in marine rubbish.
Data is collated and submitted to the Marine Conservation Society, which analyses information about waste collected from intensive cleans all over the country, and where needed, takes action to try and reduce waste.
How does it work?
Planned beach cleans are instigated with the cooperation of the Land owners along the St Ives Bay Coastline and take place over the spring, summer and early autumn months.
Data is also collated and submitted to the Marine Conservation Society who analyse waste collected from intensive cleans from all around the country and where needed take action to try and reduced this.
On the day……
- Volunteers sign in on attending
- A pre clean chat is quickly held to cover issues arising such as finding dead birds (bird flu) or animals
- Every clean a pre planned 100m x 50m stretch
- The stretch is intensively cleared recording details all items found together with weather conditions at that time.
