We’re returning to Upton Towans to continue with some invasive species removal work, this time in an area on the western side of the reserve. We’ll be taking out some buddleia and red valerian, both are invasive plants and not native to the dunes here. If left, these plants outcompete the native dune plants that support the specialist wildlife of the Towans. Removing these invasive plants gives the native dune plants a chance to thrive.
If the weather is good enough we may also do some simple 10 minute insect pollinator surveys. These Flower-Insect Timed counts are part of the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme and provide valuable information on the how the UK’s pollinator populations are changing. Pollinating insects play a vital role in our environment, ensuring that many of our crops and wild plants are able to set seed and produce fruit.
This session runs 10am – 2pm.
General information for practical conservation sessions: We recommend wearing stout footwear and clothing suitable for working outside in the exposed environment of the Towans. Do bring a spare layer, hat and full waterproofs and sun cream (if it’s going to be sunny). We supply biscuits, please bring your own hot/cold drinks and lunch.
Please book in advance so we can make sure we bring enough tools & biscuits and know to contact you if we need to cancel the session.
